Identity-Based Multi-Media Project
This lesson is intended to help students understand that visual art is essential to building culture, expressing and exploring personal identity, and revealing insights into the human experience. Students will create a collaborative artistic expression that reflects the unique identity of the participants. The core competencies addressed in this involved project are those of communication, thinking, and personal and social expression. The underlying big ideas are the concepts of identity, building community, nurturing relationships, and sensory languages. Many Box Set prints deal with the idea of IDENTITY, so any of the suggestions below would be appropriate. (Lesson designed by Ali Donnelly, Cowichan School District 79).
Time required: 5 - 90 minute class sessions
At the end of these lessons, students will be able to:
- Explore Aboriginal perspectives and knowledge, other ways of knowing, and local cultural knowledge to gain understanding through artistic works.
- Create artistic works to reflect personal voice, story, and values in connection with a specific place, time, and context.
- Develop personal and social skills, such as project planning, problem solving, team building, and self-awareness.
- Create a collaborative, 2D multi-media collage that reflects the identity of the group.
