Artist/Curatorial Statement
The main diet of the Salish people was salmon because it was so plentiful. It was like the buffalo to the Prairie people. This picture shows the people in the canoe fishing. The cedar canoe was the only source of transportation. There is a net shown in the design. The old fishing nets were made of stinging nettles fibre, but only dip-nets were made. On the beach, fish is drying on the racks. A sturgeon is jumping in the river. In the background, the mountain is shown in the form of a double-headed serpent, which is a family crest of our people. This (picture) shows the land as being alive. That is the belief of our people, that everything is alive and that we are only a small part of the circle.
