About the Visiting Artist Program

Salish Weave sponsors the Visiting Artist Program in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Victoria. This unique program brings artists into the classroom as educators, integrating their knowledge of culture and their art practice into the curriculum. Through arts-based learning, students’ awareness of the history and contemporary cultures of Coast and Straits Salish peoples, and their territories, is greatly enriched. Each artist spends an academic term (three months) with the students enrolled in Anthropology 305: Anthropology of the Arts. To engage the students, each artist chooses a theme and creates a final piece of work during his or her residency. Each work is added to the permanent public exhibition in the Cornett Building at the University of Victoria.
