Artist/Curatorial Statement
Eagles, or The Lookout, is four eagle heads looking out in different directions. When you came into a village, there was always a lookout. Brentwood Bay was always known as a great place to be so you could see enemies coming from a long ways away – it was a good vantage point. And the eagle symbolized the lookout because it was always really important. I think we don’t realize how important those roles were. There was a time where we actually had to have a lookout in case the Haida wanted to kill us. If you put yourself in that position, to do that as a young person, it was serious. It made you responsible for your village.
