In 2014, Sheilia Austin was the Visiting Artist in ANTH 305: Anthropology of the Arts. Sheilia taught students the fundamental techniques of Salish weaving on individual small looms and they learned about dyeing wool with plants and spinning the wool on a traditional Salish spinning machine. Using Sheilia’s work as examples, students learned about the traditional designs woven into Salish garments and blankets.
The design for her commissioned work, Salish Geese, represents geese in flight. Her weaving joined the works of other Visiting Artists in Anthropology at the University of Victoria.
