Coast Salish Design Elements, Number Sense, and Bear (Grade K-2)

This lesson is intended to introduce primary students to the different variations of shapes (Trigon, Crescent, Extended Crescent, Circle, Oval), and how they are used in Coast Salish art.  Students will be introduced to Maynard Johnny Jr.’s print, Spa Eth (Bear) from Salish Weave Collection Box Set II.  They will identify and name different shapes, and create an image using these design elements.  Students will also listen to stories about bears and what they eat, later rolling a dice and forming play dough “berries” for Spa Eth.
