Serigraph: Ink on Paper
tHEIRS
Artist/Curatorial Statement
tHEIRS has to do with cultural property and explores the neo-colonial aspects of the commercial market. I like the play on words in tHEIRS; it can mean it belongs the people who buy the artwork but also asks the question: who are the true heirs of that art tradition? The answer is in the title.
At the same time I feel obligated to share my culture. With understanding and exposure comes appreciation and cultural bridges between First Nations, Canadians and Americans. This sharing is symbolized by visual punning where the faces share the same mouth in the center. The design beyond the two faces is the raven.
tHEIRS is a counterpart to yOURs, two drums I painted for a solo exhibition at Two Rivers Art Gallery in Prince George.
